Everybody Hates Capitalism

This is based on a true story. I was showing a young friend some social media projects I work on, including a podcast with the subtitle "Moving Beyond Capitalism." My friend looked at it and matter of factly said, "Yeah, everybody hates capitalism." And that sparked this song.

I was talking to a young friend the other day
About the world and where it’s heading.
He looked all around at the things going down,
He looked at me and then he said, he said:

“Everybody hates capitalism
Everybody hates exploitation
Everybody loves cooperation
Let’s put an end to this frustration.”

Anything more bothering you?

He said:

“We’re working like slaves for corporate owners
Never knowing when our time is up,
We’re thrown out of work when a glitch hits the system
And then we become innocent victims.”

Tell me more!

“No one likes to see children starving,
No one likes to hear a bully boasting
No one likes to see the good crushed
No one likes their voices being hushed, oh yeah

A few get rich and move ahead
Yet millions stagnate, nearly dead
Some places get splendid amenities
Others lack basic facilities

Private wealth is glorified,
But public needs are crucified
Corruption and elitism rule the land
Kindness and wisdom are buried in the sand.”

That’s why

“Everybody hates capitalism
Everybody hates exploitation
Everybody loves cooperation
Let’s put an end to this frustration.”

Well, what are you going to do about it.
He looked at me again and said

“We’re gonna replace it sooner or later
With something fairer, something greater
We’re all fed up with the same old, same old.
We need something new, something bold
Let’s build a world for our children’s, children
It’s time to liberate the earth’s billions.”
